The rabbit in British folklore often presents the rabbit as a gentle or clever survivor, who will preserve and outwit his adversary. Much is made of the moon rabbit in folklore, due to the outline of the rabbit that can be seen on a full moon night.

A white rabbit has particular significance, and there is a tradition of saying the words "rabbit" or "rabbits" aloud on the first day of a month, to ensure good luck for the rest of it. The symbolism of three rabbits can be seen in the south coast of England too.
