Lovely to use as lightweight and tactile counters, these colourful felt balls are a versatile resource for supervised activities exploring quantities, patterns and number relationships.

A set of colourful felt balls is an open-ended learning resource that combines particularly well with our 100 dots board, dot cuboids and number cuboids. Available as a set of 100 (10 x 10 rainbow colours) or as a set of 32 (individual colours), these also pair well with wooden tongs (sold separately).

Here at Hellion HQ we particularly enjoy investigating the aerodynamic properties of felt balls. Sometimes our efforts in this respect are misunderstood, so we’d like to clarify that this is a serious piece of product research. Very serious indeed. Especially on a Friday afternoon.

Felt balls are supplied with a drawstring bag.

Materials and usage

Handmade from natural merino wool in Nepal (and therefore not vegan-friendly).

We advise against felt balls being handled by very young children. Please note that felt balls can be used as counters in supervised activities with older children, however they are not CE certified as a toy and must not be used as such. Similarly, wooden tongs (sold separately) are not a toy and must not be used as such.

Handcrafted by Dr Hellion

All toys are designed and crafted by me, Dr Hellion. Join me on Instagram for a look behind the scenes at Hellion HQ in the Forest of Bowland where I bring our high quality, durable and eco-friendly collections to life. When I’m not cutting, engraving or sanding wood I’m busy hand-finishing each toy. I dye, paint and varnish my creations with great care to make sure they are ready to leave the workshop and begin their adventures in the world.

Uniquely yours

Part of what makes your Hellion collection so special is that no two toys are exactly alike – you are buying a one-off, handcrafted item. Unlike mass-manufactured toys, mine will have subtle variations from one piece to the next. The wood will have different grain, knots and natural markings. It will absorb paint, varnish and dyes differently as a result. You may also see brushstrokes, uneven lines and elements that add to the character of each piece.

Gentle to the environment

I aim to keep a low carbon footprint by sourcing materials locally from other independent businesses, typically within 20 miles of my workshop. I also avoid petroleum-derived paints, finishes and plastics of any kind. My collections are plastic-free, solvent-free, VOCs-free, BPA-free and vegan-friendly. I hope that you will cherish these toys and pass them down to be loved by the next generation. To protect each piece, a special eco finish is applied that will continue to harden naturally over several weeks.

Made in Britain

I take my role and responsibilities within the heritage craft of British toymaking seriously. I am a member of the Heritage Craft Association as well as the British Toymakers Guild who uphold the very highest standards of craftsmanship and design. My toys are independently lab safety tested and certified CE. Hellion Toys is a member of the trade organisation ACID (Anti Copying in Design) and our designs are supported by ACID through their IP Databank and Marketplace.
